Transocean is the world’s largest offshore drilling contractor, focused on safe, effective and efficient operations.
Offshore Fleet Transocean owns or operates a modern, diversified fleet of 138 mobile offshore drilling rigs, including 70 floaters -- drillships and semisubmersible ris -- and 65 jackup rigs. Our floater fleet includes 18 drillships and 52 semisubmersible rigs, and we are constructing another five newbuild ultra-deepwater drillships.
Our offshore rigs consist of a suite of drilling equipment mounted on a hull or offshore platform. The drilling equipment comprises a derrick or mast, hoisting equipment, a rotary system, well control equipment, systems for storing, treating and pumping drilling fluids, and a power plant. Our offshore rigs generally include living quarters, cranes, heliports and storage areas. The specifications of the drilling equipment determine the drilling capabilities of the rig, and the design of the rig and its hull determines the offshore regions in which it can operate.
Moving forward to meet our clients' future needs, we are constructing five dynamically positioned ultra-deepwater drilling drillships having placed into service in 2009 five newbuild ultra-deepwater floaters: four drillships and one semisubmersible rig. The most advanced of these units will be capable of operating in water depths of up to 12,000 feet and constructing wells 40,000 feet deep.
Our 30 active dynamically positioned (DP) drillships and semisubmersibles are optimizedfor ultra-deepwater exploration in moderate environments and remote areas, where their mobility and large load-carrying capability are an advantage. Twenty-two of these rigs are outfitted to drill in water depths from 7,500 feet to 10,000 feet, and the other eight are outfitted for water depths up to 4,500 feet up and 7,200 feet.
We also operate another eight ultra-deepwater moored semisubmersible rigs, five harsh-environment moored semisubmersibles and 26 midwater floaters many of which are in the North Sea sector of the United Kingdom and Norwegian Continental Shelves.
Our 65 jackup rigs are preferred in shallower water depths because their elevating legs, which extend from the rig's hull to the sea bottom, provide a stable drilling platform. All of our jackup rigs are cantilevered rigs capable of drilling in maximum water depths of 200 feet to 400 feet.
**Two newbuild drillships are owned by a joint venture which is 50% owned and managed by Transocean. |
